The Currey Family
Robert Currey came to Coomera around 1880. His father had served in the British Army in India before bringing his family to Brisbane and becoming the postmaster at Indooroopilly. Robert married Isabella had they had nine children. One of the boys was also named Robert born in Oxley (Brisbane) 28 July 1897.
Robert went to school at Coomera State School from 1903. He walked to and from school each day. He left school before his fourteenth birthday. After leaving school he helped his father clear the land for their farm with hand grubbers, axes, bushhooks, hoes and matches. When he was seventeen he enlisted in the Army to fight in World War 1. He survived the war and was given a heroes welcome at the Coomera School of Arts.
He settled down on the farm tending to cows, pigs, bullocks, horses and poultry. The diary farm had approximately 130 milking cows.
Robert Currey (jnr) married Alice Bird. Alice was the daughter of Jessie and Elanor Bird pioneer settlers in the Maudsland area. They had 2 sons.
The Currey family are related to many of the early pioneer families - Lanes, Bignell, Siganto, Hargraves, Bird, Bozier and Kropp.
